Welcoming First Nations Elders to Newtown Neighbourhood Centre
NNC is committed to meaningful reconciliation with Australia’s First Nations peoples, and working closely with this community to better serve and support them. As part of our reconciliation journey, we welcomed local First Nations Elde rs and agencies to our new space with a morning tea on 8th March. Recommended by Aunty Jenny Thomsen, our Aboriginal and Torres Islander community representative from the RAP working group, the event provided an opportunity to share knowledge and strengthen relationships. We were pleased to host 30 people on the day, including representatives from Deadly Connections, the Aboriginal Women’s Advisory Network, and the local Community Corrections Office. Also in attendance were staff from the Department of Community and Justice, Downing Local Court and Inner West Council. Aunty Jenny and Elaine Macnish, NNC CEO, spoke about the centre’s values and services, and invited First Nations communities to be an active part of NNC. Importantly, the event provided an opportunity for NNC staff to learn more about the needs of First Nations peoples in our area, allowing us to further improve and expand our service delivery.
