Newtown Neighbourhood Centre runs diverse programs and services aimed at creating a just and inclusive community. These could not exist without volunteers dedicating valuable time and expertise. 

Our volunteers make a real difference to the community and we aim to make a difference to our volunteers. We provide an inclusive and supportive environment where people can gain skills, meet new people and contribute.

Drop-In Hub Volunteer

​We are currently inviting expressions of interest from community members who may be interested in joining the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre’s Drop-In Hub Team in a weekly, rostered volunteer capacity. This free, friendly service is open to all and provides access to a wealth of community knowledge and support services in a welcoming and inclusive environment. 
Purpose of the Role
​

To play an important role in supporting people to access information and referrals for accommodation and homelessness support, emergency aid and food services, legal and domestic violence support, mental health and wellbeing services, Centrelink support, healthy ageing advice, and local community events and services. The role also involves helping maintain a safe and approachable space where community members can use shared resources such as a computer with internet access, a public phone, and a quiet, shaded courtyard to relax and recharge.

Who should apply?

We are seeking individuals who bring a depth of life experience, reliability, and a calm, grounded approach. This opportunity may be especially well suited to those who are not actively seeking paid employment but are motivated by a desire to give back, stay connected, and contribute meaningfully to their local community. Volunteers may also support gentle social connection by encouraging participation in small groups and fostering a sense of belonging within the Hub. The role is well supported, with a thorough induction process and ongoing training opportunities to build confidence and capability.

Volunteer Community Sign Language Educator

This role requires a volunteer to facilitate introductory sign language sessions for community members, supporting inclusive communication and increasing awareness of Deaf culture and accessibility needs.

Purpose of the Role
​

The primary purpose of this role is to deliver engaging and accessible sign language learning opportunities, foster inclusive communication practices, and support community connection through education and awareness.

  • Plan and deliver beginner-friendly sign language sessions or workshops.
  • Teach basic vocabulary, conversational signs, and communication techniques.
  • Create a welcoming, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Adapt teaching approach to suit varying skill levels and learning needs.
  • Encourage participation and build confidence among learners.

Community Connections Volunteer

Help to provide fun, meaningful and inclusive programs with the Hub team from our vibrant Darley street HQ, and in the surrounding areas.

The Overview

  • Depending on program running time, can range from approximately 2 hours per week for ongoing programs to occasional one-off excursions.
  • supporting client-focused social groups and programs that promote engagement and connection.
  • You're with a team and supervised on activities with experienced workers
  • A great fit for people passionate about community-building who enjoy working with people from vulnerable and diverse backgrounds.​​

Case Study

The Drop in Hub runs a weekly One Stop Shop between 2pm - 4pm every Thursday. It's a bustling, welcoming space for community members to visit a range of support services in one spot. Visitors can be made to feel welcome with a cup of coffee, explained what services can provide them, and be signed up for a waiting list to see an agency representative while getting their clothes washed. Volunteers add warmth, local spirit and care to the experience of guests.​

Individual Social Support Volunteer

ISS is a regular commitment to meet individually with an older person seeking social connection.

The Overview

  • 2 hour approx  / week, as agreed upon by yourself and your person​
  • A weekly or fortnightly social catchup - think coffee, walk, tea in the garden etc - whatever you both decide works for you
  • You're matched with an older person who has a similar background or interest's - so we know you'll hit it off
  • Online training and ongoing support​

Case Study

June* has lived a rich and full life travelling across the world as a performer. Now 90, she lives in Enmore alone since her partner passed some years ago. When applying for the program, June hoped: "I won't have to go a month or so without seeing a soul."
​June was matched with Cam*, who has been visiting every fortnight since 2022. Cam brings coffee and they enjoy biscotti together, playing old records and going through June's many fabulous photos.

Social Support Groups Volunteer

Social Support Groups involve community language groups getting together from former Yugoslavia (Monday), Greek (Tuesday and Thursday), Portuguese (Thursday), and English speaking backgrounds (Friday).

The Overview

  • A weekly, scheduled 3 hour shift 
  • Deliver morning tea, games, speakers sessions, outings and other activities for the group
  • A great fit for people from younger generations of the same cultural background or language proficiency​
  • You're working with a Group Leader on site at NNC, 11-13 Darley St Newtown or an off-site aged care centre
  • In-person training, full supervision on shift and ongoing support​​​

Case Study

Andre* is a member of the Inner West's large Greek and Cypriot communities. He's been volunteering in the Greek Mens Seniors group for many years at their aged care centre in Marrickville.

​The group meet and chat in language over briki (coffee), playing cards, Greek music and films every week.
