Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) aims to build an inclusive, resilient, self-reliant and creative community.

For over 40 years we've provided assistance to people who are the most vulnerable, with a particular focus on those at risk of social isolation, homelessness and domestic violence, mental illness, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and people on low incomes.

We are only able to do what we do with the support of our community, and we want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH!

What's on

We have moved!

Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) is starting an exciting new chapter in the story of our centre at 11-13 Darley Street.

For 45 years, we have celebrated and supported the diversity and creativity of our neighbourhood, creating a space for everyone to belong. We are from the community, for the community, connecting residents, services, businesses and volunteers to maintain the wellbeing and unique culture of Newtown.

After four decades of supporting the community from our address at 1 Bedford Street, NNC is excited to have moved to a new space. Our new location is allowing us to continue to strengthen our community through connection and care in a new, purpose-built service hub, customised for the needs of our centre and the community we serve.

We've been enjoying welcoming the incredible Newtown community to our new home on Darley Street.

FAQ's

Why did Newtown Neighbourhood Centre move?
Newtown Neighbourhood Centre’s teams were split across two locations, and services were limited by the condition and size of the Bedford Street building.

After many productive years at Bedford Street, the move to 11-13 Darley Street, Newtown, begins an exciting chapter in the growth of our centre and support of the Newtown community. The custom spaces enable us to better care for our clients in a more comfortable environment and offers the opportunity to connect with new members of our neighbourhood.

We look forward to welcoming the Newtown community and continuing to support their needs in our new location.
Does the move represent a decrease in support for the community and/or funding?
We will not have a decrease in funding or the services we are offering.

Newtown Neighbourhood Centre’s board and management team worked closely with the Inner West Council to identify an appropriate location to support the expansion of our services and to ensure that the new building is fit for purpose. Over a million dollars was invested in the site to create a welcoming, fresh and functional space, purpose-built for the needs of the Newtown community and the services we offer.
Our support for our neighbourhood is stronger than ever.
Will Newtown Neighbourhood Centre be continuing to provide the same services?
Newtown Neighbourhood Centre will continue to provide essential services and support at our new purpose-built premises at Darley Street.

All service times and information can be seen on our Whats On page.
Does the move signal a new focus for the centre? Will any new services be introduced?
Newtown Neighbourhood Centre has always been, and will always be, a place for our community to connect, collaborate and support each other.
The move to Darley Street begins an exciting new chapter in the story of the centre.

While we will continue to deliver essential services, we are looking forward to building on our support of aged care and families, as well increasing the utilisation of our spaces for community gatherings, group meetings and celebrations.
The new premises takes Newtown Neighbourhood Centre away from the Hub, a main thoroughfare.
How will the centre stay in the public eye after it has moved to a quiet back street?
The move to Darley Street takes us to the heart of our neighbourhood, among our residents, providing a greater sense of community and offering privacy for our more vulnerable visitors.

Newtown Neighbourhood Centre will remain in the minds of our residents through our work – the dedication of our staff and volunteers, our weekly support services, our events, our venue hire, and by creating a place for everyone to belong.
How will Newtown Town Hall be used after Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is no longer using the premises? Will it continue to be a community space, or is it being sold off for a corporate venture?
The Inner West Council has committed to opening a Pride Centre at Newtown Town Hall and is currently investigating opportunities for potential partnerships and resourcing support for its operation. For information on the future of Newtown Town Hall, please contact Inner West Council.
Will the centre still offer room hire for community groups and events?
Venue hire continues to be a key part of Newtown Neighbourhood Centre’s services, and we hope that our brand-new spaces will encourage more of our community to congregate and celebrate with us.
How many rooms will be available? What is the capacity of each room?
Our new location offers four unique spaces for the Newtown community to utilise. A hall, medium size meeting room, a small meeting room and an outdoor garden area. Contact roomhire@newtowncentre.org to see if Newtown Neighbourhood Centre will suit your next gathering, event or meet up. Room hire is available now.
Is the location still easily accessible by public transport?
Yes, the centre is still easily accessible by public transport; it is within walking distance from both Newtown and St Peters train stations, as well as several bus stops for the 370, 422 and 308.
