"Volunteers don't just provide practical support, they bring warmth, compassion, lived experience and genuine human connection." – Vita, Volunteer Coordinator On any given day at NNC, there are countless small acts of kindness unfolding behind the scenes. Whether it’s helping someone navigate a form at the Drop-In Hub, sharing a chat and a hot drink at One Stop Shop, helping teach an English class, tending the community garden or supporting a rough sleeper through the streets of Newtown, there are myriad ways our volunteers offer support and companionship to those in our community. According to Vita, NNC's Volunteer Coordinator, these moments of connection are what make the organisation tick. "Our volunteer program is really at the heart of NNC," she explains. Volunteers contribute across almost every aspect of NNC's work. They provide administrative support, assist community members at the Drop-In Hub, support seniors' groups, help deliver community events and participate in outreach programs. "You can't walk from one end of the Centre to the other without seeing volunteers making a difference," Vita says. "We put a strong focus on making sure volunteers feel supported and included through training, ongoing support and being part of the wider NNC community” More than practical support While volunteers help deliver vital services, Vita says their greatest impact is often found in the relationships they build. "Volunteers have an enormous impact on the people who access NNC's services because they help create the sense of connection and belonging that's at the heart of what we do," she says. "What's really special is that volunteers don't just provide practical support – they bring warmth, compassion, lived experience and genuine human connection." For people experiencing social isolation, homelessness or difficult life circumstances, that connection can be transformative. "For many community members, especially people who may be isolated or going through a difficult time, that friendly face, conversation or simple act of support can make a huge difference," Vita says. She points to volunteers involved in one-to-one support for socially isolated seniors and the Newtopian Homeless Outreach Program. "For many vulnerable seniors or homeless people, that connection can become a real lifeline, and serve as the first step toward rebuilding trust, reducing isolation and accessing the broader wraparound support and services they need to improve their wellbeing and stability." Growing alongside the community For many volunteers, the experience evolves into something far greater than they initially expected. One volunteer began by assisting with NNC's daytime English classes. Inspired by the connections they had formed and recognising a growing need, they took the initiative to establish an evening class of their own. "They have become so passionate and confident in their roles that they have started an evening English class themselves," Vita says. "They now run that class independently, creating even more opportunities for people in the community to learn, connect and feel supported. "It's a wonderful example of volunteers growing into leaders and shaping programs based on community need." Another volunteer started by providing administrative support one morning a week before branching out into other areas of the organisation. "As he became more connected with the Centre, he started volunteering with the One Stop Shop program, which is especially meaningful to him because he is studying community services and wants to build a career helping people," Vita says. "He's now also preparing to take on data collection work, which shows how volunteering at NNC can grow alongside someone's skills, interests and confidence." A sense of purpose and belonging Many volunteers come to NNC wanting to give back to their local community. Others are looking to connect with people, use their skills in meaningful ways or pay forward support they themselves have received. "What keeps volunteers engaged is the sense of purpose and connection they find here," Vita says. "They build friendships, develop confidence and skills, and can see firsthand the difference they're making in people's lives. "I think volunteers also stay because there's a real sense of belonging at NNC. People aren't just coming in to complete a task – they become part of the culture and community of the organisation." Celebrating our volunteers National Volunteer Week offers an opportunity to pause and acknowledge the people whose generosity helps sustain so much of NNC's work. "Volunteer Week is always a lovely time as we get to show the volunteers how much they mean to us and really just give them a big metaphorical hug from the rest of the team," Vita says. At this year's appreciation evening, volunteers gathered with staff to share stories, enjoy delicious food and mocktails, and celebrate the relationships they have built together. Staff also wrote notes of gratitude for volunteers. "Volunteers get to relax and socialise with other staff and volunteers they might not usually have contact with and we get to make them feel a bit special for the night," Vita says. "There are so many ways to volunteer with NNC – small roles, big roles, temporary opportunities, one-off events, or ongoing one-on-one support.
