Over the past 18 months at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, Community Development Coordinator, Michael Peterson has led events like International Women’s Day, Homelessness Week, and Winter Vibes, while also coordinating English classes, Community Conversations, and supporting the One Stop Shop’s Chat and Connect program.
Q What drew you to working at NNC? A I’ve always wanted to work in a place where people are genuinely committed to community, and NNC stood out as a place where connection, trust and care are part of everything we do. Q Can you tell us a bit about what your role at NNC involves? A I lead events, Community Conversations, English classes, and support various programs across the centre. Before joining NNC, I spent years as a military veteran and a chef, which taught me resilience, teamwork, and the quiet power of connection. Q What do you enjoy most about your job? A What I love most at NNC is how everyone shows up for each other. My role is about making sure people feel seen and heard, creating a safe, welcoming place where they belong. Community is built in the everyday moments: quiet conversations, shared smiles, and small acts of kindness that carry real weight and ripple outward. Q Is there a project you’ve worked on that you’re especially proud of? A The Community Conversations have been a highlight. They were incredible with so many stories and so much insight. I feel very privileged to hear people’s experiences. Some participants really let me in, being very open and trusting, which is a reminder of the real power in just listening. Q Do you have a favourite story or moment with a community member you can share? A My favourite moments are seeing our community members come together at our events, with so many happy faces and shared enjoyment. The International Women’s Day High Tea was a standout. The recent Homelessness Week event was also a favourite, with services and volunteers coming together, a great band, and the community showing up for each other. Q Are there any new programs you would like to see at the centre, or any future programs or plans you are looking forward to implementing? A I would love to continue building deeper connections with the community and forming meaningful partnerships, while creating more informal spaces where people can connect. I am also excited to be working on our Halloween Carpark Party and have some fun plans in store for it. |
