Peer Bridge Program
|
The Peer Bridge Program at Newtown Neighbourhood Centre is an initiative designed to support young people as they transition from local primary schools into Newtown High School of the Performing Arts (NHSPA) and Sydney Secondary College – Leichhardt Campus (SSC-LC). Recognising that this move can be both exciting and challenging, the program focuses on easing the social and emotional adjustments that come with entering a new school environment. It fosters early connections between incoming Year 7 students and current Year 9 mentors, helping to create a sense of belonging and familiarity before the school year begins.
At the heart of the program is peer mentorship; a model that empowers young people to support one another through shared experiences. Year 9 mentors are trained to provide guidance, encouragement, and a listening ear to their younger peers, while also developing their own leadership, communication, and empathy skills. Through interactive sessions, group activities, and school-based meetups, the program builds positive peer relationships that strengthen confidence and community among students.
Supporting the program behind the scenes is NNC’s dedicated youth workers, who work closely with families and guardians to ensure a smooth transition. This role involves advocating on behalf of students and their Parents/Guardians, facilitating communication, and building strong relationships with each school’s wellbeing team. By supporting families in this way, the youth worker helps to address challenges early, strengthen home–school connections, and ensure that students receive consistent guidance both at home and at school.
Developed and coordinated by the Community Strengthening Team at NNC, the Peer Bridge Program reflects the Centre’s ongoing commitment to youth development and community connection. By working in close partnership with NHSPA, SSC-LC, and local primary schools, the program ensures students and families feel supported throughout this key transition. In doing so, it contributes to a more inclusive and connected school environment where young people are encouraged to thrive both academically and personally.
