Jon Swain

Jon has more than 16 years’ experience in homelessness policy, service delivery and systems reform, and is recognised nationally for his work on homelessness, extreme heat and climate resilience. In 2024, he was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to investigate international responses to extreme heat and homelessness, with his findings published in the report The Heat Will Get Here Before the Housing. Jon has also contributed to the development of innovative heat-response initiatives in Australia, including the award-winning Mobile Cooling Hub project, and was a founding member of the Australian Climate and Homelessness Alliance (ACHA).
In 2026, Jon founded Byabarra, a climate and homelessness organisation focused on delivering practical, action-oriented solutions to protect people experiencing homelessness from the impacts of extreme weather and climate change. Jon is a proud Inner West resident, having lived in the area for almost 30 years. He is a strong supporter of the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre and its vital role in fostering a connected, inclusive and resilient community. |
