The Drop In Hub

Picture

"The Drop In Hub offers something many people have been missing: a place where they feel seen, heard and valued." – Phuong, Community Connections Coordinator

When life feels overwhelming, knowing where to turn can make all the difference. For many people in our community, the Drop In Hub is that place – a welcoming front door where anyone can walk in, access practical support or connect with someone who will listen.
"Everyone is welcomed with warmth, respect and without judgement," says Phuong, Community Connections Coordinator. Every day, people come to the Hub for help with homelessness, housing, financial stress, food insecurity, domestic and family violence, mental and physical health concerns, or simply to find the right service for their needs.

An holistic approach
"People rarely come to the Hub with just one concern. Someone seeking food relief may also be at risk of homelessness, struggling with their mental health, experiencing family violence, or feeling isolated," Phuong says.
The Hub's role is to provide immediate practical help while connecting people with the right services. Through the weekly One Stop Shop program, more than 20 partner organisations come together in one place to provide wraparound support.
"Rather than focusing on a single issue, the Hub takes a holistic, person-centred approach," Phuong says. "Instead of expecting people to navigate complex systems alone, we walk alongside them."

A fresh start

One recent visitor was a 27-year-old man experiencing homelessness for the first time after fleeing domestic and family violence. He arrived with nothing but the clothes he was wearing. He had no identification, mobile phone, transport card, personal belongings or safe place to stay, and with his family overseas, his sense of isolation was overwhelming. "The Drop In Hub became his first safe point of contact," Phuong says.
The team helped secure crisis accommodation, create an email address, arrange transport and connect him with homelessness case management. He also received warm meals, care packs and immediate material aid. Through One Stop Shop, he was connected with Centrelink, housing supports and specialist services, while a mobile phone allowed him to remain in contact with support services.
"During long waits between appointments, he found moments of peace sitting in the sunshine at local parks," Phuong says. "For the first time in a long time, he experienced a sense of freedom and calm outside the cycle of domestic violence."
Over the following weeks, he accessed Centrelink payments, continued engaging with NNC and began planning to restart his cleaning business and regain his independence. "Perhaps the most powerful moment came when he returned to the Drop In Hub, not because he needed support, but just to thank the staff for being there when he needed them most," Phuong says.

Connection comes first

What makes the Drop In Hub different, Phuong says, is that people don't need an appointment or referral before asking for help. "The Drop In Hub starts with connection," she says. "It is a safe, welcoming place where everyone belongs."
Staff and trained volunteers provide practical assistance, information and compassionate support, while connecting people with specialist NNC programs and trusted partner organisations.
"Everything we do is guided by human practice," Phuong says. "We recognise people's resilience, respect their choices, and work at their pace to build trust, restore confidence and create pathways towards a better future."
That work is becoming increasingly important as demand grows. "Over the past year, we have seen a noticeable increase in the number of people seeking help, as well as the complexity of the issues they face," Phuong says. "Rising housing costs and cost-of-living pressures mean that more people are reaching crisis point."
At the same time, specialist services are often stretched beyond capacity. "One of our greatest challenges is ensuring we can continue to meet growing community need," she says.
[Subhead] Keeping the door open For Phuong, every person who comes to the Hub deserves compassion, dignity and hope. "The Drop In Hub exists to ensure no one has to face crisis alone," she says.
"Sometimes the support we provide is practical. Other times, the most important thing we offer is a safe place where someone feels heard, believed and supported.
"When you support the Drop In Hub, you are investing in a stronger, more connected community, one where people facing their hardest moments can find kindness, practical support and the opportunity to rebuild their lives."
