You Can Help At NNC

Volunteers are important contributors to the activities of
the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. Their duties range
form helping the elderly to do their shopping, to sitting on
our board of directors.

People volunteer for many reasons and we respect
whatever positive motivation you may have. A number of
volunteers get great satisfaction at being able to help
those in the community who require assistance of some
kind, and others enjoy making new contacts and finding
something to do with their spare time.

There are a number of different projects, working with
different people - all of whom need willing hands and open
hearts.

Volunteers are provided with the following:

  • Training
  • Job description and handbook
  • Volunteer expenses
  • Assistance with career development
  • Reference confirming your contribution to our
    services.

Roomies Arts Program - email the service
Running fortnightly at Tom Foster Community Centre at
Darley Street. The Arts program has been running for 5
years with residents of licensed boarding houses in the
inner west. This year the focus will be ceramics with an annual
exhibition in a local gallery to display the works. If you
have a strong interest or background in the arts this could
be a great opportunity to try out your skills. Having
worked with people with disabilities is an advantage but
not essential.

Shoppers - email the service
Helping the elderly and people with disabilities to do their
shopping at Marrickville Metro. You need to enjoy the
company of older people,be willing and able to carry
parcels and help those with disabilities around the shops.

Activities Assistants - email the service
Assistants are needed for activities we run for people with
disabilities living in licensed boarding houses. Help in
projects, ranging from visual arts to helping on day trips
around the city.

Neighbours - email the service
Multicultural Neighbour Aid (Greek & former Yugoslavia)
needs people to join in day groups with elderly from
non-english speaking backgrounds. While a second
language-Greek, Macedonian, Croatian or Serbian would
be useful, anyone who has an interest in activities for the
elderly is welcome.

Office - email the service
Perform duties such as taking calls and messages, giving
information on services & emergency accommodation,
photocopying, distribution of mail & computer work.

Festival - email the service
The annual Newtown Festival is a huge event and our
co-ordinator needs help with stall bookings, publicity,
musical entertainment, sponsorship and general admin. On
the day we need marshals and stage assistants. This
would suit people with an interest in events management.

Volunteer roles include:

  • Pre-festival administration and area program
  • Management
  • Traffic marshalling
  • Stall marshalling
  • Roving site marshal
  • Stage management
  • Area management
