You Can Help At NNC

Volunteers are important contributors to the activities of the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. Their duties range form helping the elderly to do their shopping, to sitting on our board of directors.

People volunteer for many reasons and we respect whatever positive motivation you may have. A number of volunteers get great satisfaction at being able to help those in the community who require assistance of some kind, and others enjoy making new contacts and finding something to do with their spare time.

There are a number of different projects, working with different people - all of whom need willing hands and open hearts.

Volunteers are provided with the following:

  • Volunteer Handbook
  • Training
  • Job Description
  • Volunteer expenses
  • Assistance with career development
  • Reference confirming your contribution to our
    services.

You will be supported by the Community Development Worker and will have access to First Aid and basic walking group training through the Heart Foundation. A great opportunity to meet new people, stay active and discover Sydney. The group will start on 22nd September 2011 and will run every Thursday 8.30-10am meeting outside the NNC.

Roomies Arts Program - email the service
Running fortnightly at Tom Foster Community Centre at Darley Street. The Arts program has been running for 5 years with residents of licensed boarding houses in the inner west. This year the focus will be ceramics with an annual exhibition in a local gallery to display the works. If you have a strong interest or background in the arts this could be a great opportunity to try out your skills. Having worked with people with disabilities is an advantage but not essential.

Neighbours - email the service
Multicultural Neighbour Aid (Greek & former Yugoslavia) needs people to join in day groups with elderly from non-english speaking backgrounds. While a second language-Greek, Macedonian, Croatian or Serbian would be useful, anyone who has an interest in activities for the elderly is welcome.

HACC Day Care Centre
The main objective of the Day Care Centre is to encourage clients to access support services in order to maintain their independence and well being, and also to be part of their local community by participating at the day care centre, going on recreational outings and having the opportunity to listen to guest speakers. The meetings take place in an informal environment with light lunch, Greek music, structured recreational activities and transport provided to frail members. The group meetings take place every Tuesday and Thursday on a weekly basis.

Culturally Linguistically Diverse Support Group for Greek Men
This support group for men over 55 provides a place to meet and participate in structured activities and recreational outings. There are guest speakers and discussion groups on matters of health and other essential services relating to their age group. The Greek speaking men’s group is facilitated by a male worker and meets on a weekly basis. The Hacc day Care Centre and the Culturally Linguistically Diverse Support group for Greek speaking men is a joint initiative with Multicultural Health Service at Marrickville Health Centre (Sydney Local Health Network)

Multicultural Dementia Support Group
Come along and meet with others in a similar situation over an informal morning tea. Talk to health professionals and service providers and learn about the support that is available in your local area.
