Joe & Harmony
Joe & Harmony are about preventing Newtown from becoming homogenised and they want to:
What the Haight-Ashbury district is to San Francisco so is Newtown to Sydney: ground-zero for the counter-culture. Joe & Harmony would like to keep it that way. Rather than sitting idly by watching the homogenisation of Marrickville Council's jewel in the crown happen, Joe & Harmony would be active in keeping Newtown in the hands of the people who provided its reputation as an epi-centre for peace, love, tolerance, acceptance, arts, and cultural diversity. They would be approaching artists (Tim Freedman for example) who have a history with Newtown and encourage them into a collective with political and financial clout to physically buy key property in the Newtown district - the aim being to keep the property in the hands of people who care about the aforementioned characteristics of Newtown.
Initiating plans for King Street to become a mall with a light rail network, car pools and casual bicycle hire would likewise be on their to-do list. As too, a push to get shop keepers onto Green energy. Creating more green areas for relaxation and public performance. A high level of friendly police would be central to these plans.
