Environmental sustainability

At Newtown Festival we’re passionate about sustainability and sound environmental practices.  We have a history of environmental innovation, and we’re committed to positioning Newtown Festival as a leader in the area of urban festival environmental policy and practices.

Our commitment to date includes:

Community Education: The festival’s Eco Zone (co-hosted by The Watershed & Planet Ark) provides interactive displays and presentations on sustainable lifestyle options.  Our Cycle Zone features great workshops and information from local Cycling organizations and businesses.

Packaging: All stallholders at Newtown Festival are required to use biodegradable food packaging, cutlery & cups.

Power: The Festival power is provided by biodiesel generators, which provide the power for sound production for all stages, and our market food stalls.

Re-use/re-cycle: Festival goers are invited to participate in the giant clothes swap hosted on site by Planet Ark & The Watershed.  And The Bower offers info on the Reuse Referral Service, the Eco-Library and Live Demonstrations on turning the pre-loved into re-loved.

Sustainable Printing: Festival programmes & posters are printed on sustainable stock, using soy based ink.

Transport: We encourage festival goers to choose a sustainable form of transport when coming to Newtown Festival.  Free Bicycle Valet Parking is available in the carpark of the Dendy Cinema, on Mary Street, or festival goers can take the train to Newtown Station, or one of the many buses to King Street, Newtown.

Waste Management: Organic Waste - The festival has a large worm farm on site which removes 75% of compostable food waste.

What can you do?: You can join us in our pursuit of environmental sustainability, by adding one more sustainable practice to your life… Give up bottled water (for life) …start a compost…or a worm farm… get some chooks…cycle to work (even once a week)…switch to green energy… recycle…re-use …make one more sustainable lifestyle choice.  No matter how small…it’s significant.  Thank you.
