NEWTOWN FESTIVAL...A RESOUNDING SUCCESS

The excitement was palpable as Sunday morning rolled around, and with the help of perfect weather the punters turned out in droves to dance, feast and make merry. The 36th Newtown Festival broke all attendance records, with an estimated 90,000 people visiting the festival site across the day.

We’re thrilled to announce that Newtown Festival has since been awarded the title of ‘Best Community Event in NSW’ at the Australian Events Awards.

Newtown Festival is run by the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) each year, with gold coin donations at the gates helping to provide invaluable support services for the local community. Previous years have seen less than a third of attendees give a donations, but this year, that amount increased to over 50% of attendees giving a donation. A huge thank you to everyone who gave a note or coin at the gate!

The 2014 program was packed to the brim. Highlights included exuberant live performances across all music stages, stellar line-up of authors in the Writers’ Tent, a packed-out Kids Zone, eco workshops, stalls and the famous Dog Show, to name just a few. Equally exciting were the brand-new additions to the Festival program – a re-vamped Live Art Hub, pop-up poets on stages, The Alcazar circus tent, and the popular ‘Newtown Local’ culinary collective.

But as always, the real spirit of the day was best displayed in the local community. Ecstatic dancing, eccentric costumes, over-excited children and wide smiles all played testament to the special place that Newtown Festival holds in the hearts of locals. Surrounding streets, closed to traffic for the day, played host to brass bands and reggae groups, buskers and revellers, and even an Irish dancer or two.

Once again, police have congratulated attendees and organisers for the relaxed and well-planned atmosphere of the event. Despite huge crowds, Newtown Festival was successfully incident-free.

It’s safe to say that Newtown Festival 2014 was a resounding success. A massive thanks to the sponsors, partners, volunteers, stallholders, bands and performers, without whose generous support the festival would not take place. And once again, thank you to all who came to celebrate, and donated to support Newtown Neighbourhood Centre. We’ll see you again next year!

Newtown Festival 2015 will be held on Sunday, 8th November.

Your coin makes a difference...You may know that the Newtown Festival is the principal fundraiser for the Newtown Neighbourhood Centre (NNC) but what you may not know is that we only receive a small portion of donations at the festival gates in comparison with the crowd size. Your gold coin donation goes a long way in helping the NNC to provide vital services to the community. One gold coin is all it takes to help the NNC continue its vision for a ‘just community that includes and acts’ - plus an amazing value for a whole day of incredible entertainment and a great festival vibe!
