Easy Access at Newtown Station - 2006
The Newtown Neighbourhood
Centre decided to highlight the ongoing accessibility problems that members of
our community have at Newtown Railway station, and also with regard to other
railway stations in the area and lack of appropriate alternatives. Newtown
station's accessibility is extremely limited and unsafe for people with a
range of mobility impairments, older people parents with prams and anyone
negotiating the station with heavy shopping bags.
The lack of access provisions, such as a lift, at Newtown station is preventing
all these people from using the railway as an easy and safe means of transport.
It is also preventing them from getting to our centre and the services and
supports we provide. Those that use our centre as well as the general public
have brought the inequity of this situation to our attention.
There are 8 railway
stations within the Marrickville local government area and none of these are
accessible and none that we are aware of are earmarked as easy access'. In
addition there are a further 6 (including Newtown) bordering the LGA. The
nearest with easy access are Summer Hill and Wolli Creek, but neither is staffed
for all services which limits this accessibility.
We here at the NNC feel that the case for Newtown Station to be upgraded is long
overdue and now urgent. We urge you to join us in this campaign to make Newtown
Station and other stations within the Marrickville Area accessible.

Public Transport Information Kit - Marrickville Council
Council has prepared an Accessible Public Transport Information Kit to explain
the issues and priorities about accessible transport in the local area. The kit
provides information on the extent to which people are affected by limited
accessible transport in our area, and the broader social and economic effects on
our community. The information will be of use to stakeholders who may want to
advocate for improvements to local accessible transport, as well as to assist
government officers planning to achieve their own accessible transport
priorities.
