Boarding House Project
The Boarding House Project aims to enhance the independence and improve the quality of life for people who are aged or who have a disability and live in Boarding Houses in the Inner West. The Newtown Neighbourhood Centre Boarding House Project (BHP) was established in 1993. As a result of community consultation in the Inner West, a lack of services for people who have a disability and live in licensed boarding houses was identified. The project funded by the Dept. of Ageing Disability and Homecare was for a 1-day a week day programme and once a fortnight art group. The Boarders and Lodgers Project, a program that provides services to residents of regular boarding houses who are aged or have a disability, began in 2002. The project undertook research into who was living in unlicensed boarding houses in the Marrickville area and was subsequently funded to provide social support to those with a disability or frail aged living in these places.
